Rodeo Run donates an incredibull 3,300 meals to food insecure Texans

March 7, 2022

The Rodeo Run, part of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, donates their leftover snacks each year to a local food bank. Since 2018, Move For Hunger has happily been helping organize the food donations transports!

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has been a Texan tradition for almost 100 years, hosting an array of events including multiple races, a livestock show, food and drink competitions, live music, parades, and of course, a rodeo. The Rodeo Run is one of the race events that occurs after the Downtown Rodeo Parade.

For this year’s transportation, the Rodeo Run had 4,000 lbs of donations in perishable fruits and granola/protein bars for food insecure communities in Texas. Atlantic Relocation Systems - Houston volunteered for this pick-up to transport to The Beacon Homeless Shelter, but there was one slight issue!

When the mover arrived, he discovered the pallets of food were actually in a location his truck was unable to access. Instead, the mover had to use an on-site forklift to drive around a mile each way to the location of the pallets and pick up the food. Thankfully, much like our movers do when they run into an issue, they pushed on, persevered, and had a successful delivery!

Atlantic Relocation Systems - Houston has been part of the Move For Hunger network since 2013 and has collected and transported more than 45,000 lbs since joining. That’s over 37,500 meals they’ve provided to food insecure Texans! Thanks for all your hard work and dedication to the fight against hunger!

In Texas, more than 4 million people are food insecure, including more than 1 million children. We are so thankful for each organization in our network that is working to end hunger in the United States!

If you’re interested in joining the fight, you can sign up to host a food drive or become part of our mover network!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
