The Place At Barker Cypress Feeds Hundreds In Houston And Is Named May's Community Of The Month

May 30, 2022

Each month, Move For Hunger chooses a community that displays a huge dedication to ending hunger. This month, The Place at Barker Cypress, located in Houston, Texas, was awarded Community of the Month!

This May, The Place at Barker Cypress collected more than 400lbs of donations from their participation in an MC Companies food drive. This amount of donated food equals about 335 meals that will be donated to those in need. Donated items received from this food drive were transported by members from The Place at Barker Cypress and taken to Katy Christian Ministries Food Pantry in Katy, Texas.

This was The Place at Barker Cypress’s first food drive through Move For Hunger, and we’re excited to see the progression of their impact throughout 2022! MC Companies has been a partner since 2020, and we’re beyond grateful for every one of their properties that has joined the fight against hunger!

In Texas, over 4 million people face hunger, with 1 in 7 children not knowing where their next meals will come from- so every donation is appreciated and much needed!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
