Pine Valley Apartments named Community of the Month for May 2023

June 15, 2023

Each month, Move For Hunger chooses a community that displays a dedication to ending hunger. For this May, Pine Valley Apartments was awarded Community of the Month!

Pine Valley residents donated nearly 300 lbs of food in their recent Spread the Love food drive which will provide about 250 meals to their local community. A special thanks to Hopkins & Sons for transporting the food to the Food Bank of Delaware.

“Our motivation behind partnering with Move for Hunger is due to the fact that more and more Americans are facing hunger and we strive to help in any way that we can,” said Christina Porter, Assistant Property Manager of Pine Valley Apartments. “We appreciate being a part of the Move for Hunger organization, as it makes a huge difference in helping to stop food waste and providing food to those in need.”

Pine Valley Apartments, a Dolben property, has been a partner with Move For Hunger since 2019. Since joining our network, they have collected nearly 1,500 lbs of donations, equalling over 1,200 meals for local food insecure communities.

Porter continued, “We feel like it is important to give back now more than ever, especially being an apartment community, as we understand that so much food is wasted during the moving process. With us partnering with Move For Hunger, we believe that any amount of food that is donated can make a huge difference to help those that are facing hunger.”

“Pine Valley has been working with the Move for Hunger organization for several years and our residents and staff always make it a point to donate anything they can during the food drive. Partnering with Move for Hunger is just one of the ways Dolben shows their dedication to giving back to the community and helping those in need.”

In Maryland, more than 600,000 people are food insecure, with over 1 in 8 children not knowing where their next meal will come from. We’re beyond grateful for every community that has joined us in the fight against hunger!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
