Park Lane Village hits it big with its first food drive and wins Community of the Month

September 7, 2021

Talk about starting off with a bang! We work with over 2,000 properties at Move For Hunger and normally it takes a couple of different events to hit the 1,000 lb milestone of food donated. Well, one food drive into their tenure, and Park Lane Village already blew past that which made them an easy choice for August Community of the Month.

The Greystar property is located in Farmington, Utah just on the north side of Salt Lake City. They joined Move For Hunger earlier this year and have already made an impact in their local community.

During a recent food drive, Park Lane Village collected 1,150 pounds of food. That’s good for more than 950 meals. They partnered with Mountain States Moving & Storage who assisted on the pickup.

Mountain States Moving & Storage has been busy recently. So far this year, they’ve collected 6,700 pounds of food with most of that (including this one) going to the Utah Food Bank. Since joining the Move For Hunger network in 2012, they’ve helped transport over 12,000 pounds of food - more than 10,000 meals.

The Utah Food Bank helps feed the more than 300,000 food insecure people in Beehive State including 1 in 8 kids. Food insecurity has been on the rise since COVID first hit in March of last year with many food banks reporting that traffic was up 50% with many people visiting food banks for the very first time.

It’s due to food drives like the one at Park Lane Village that will help chip away at the hunger crisis a little bit at a time. If you want to be part of our multi-family networking dedicated to ending hunger, click here.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
