Our February Community of the Month is 4th West Apartments!

March 1, 2021

4th West Team PhotoMove For Hunger’s multi-family partners continue to be huge contributors to our fight against hunger in America. Due to their team and residents’ commitment to their local community, we are proud to announce that our Community of the Month for February is 4th West Apartments!

Last month 4th West donated 432 lbs. of food as part of their property move-out donations. Their substantial contribution was transported by Mountain States Moving and Storage to Utah Food Bank.

“Helping others is a necessity. Helping is contagious; it spreads and it’s rewarding! The reputation that Move For Hunger has is amazing! We love being a part of that,” a representative from 4th West said.

4th West is a Greystar property located in Salt Lake City, Utah. Their 432 lbs. donation will provide 360 meals to those facing food insecurity in Utah.

In Utah, one out of nine people struggles with hunger daily. A study found that Utah needs around $171,029,000 more per year to meet its food needs. 4th West’s contribution is a start in decreasing the number of people going hungry in Utah.

“Our team and our residents here at 4th West are amazing. Everyone goes the extra mile to help each other out,” a representative from 4th West said.

We are grateful to 4th West’s residents and team for partnering with Move For Hunger to lessen food waste and instead donate their leftover items to those in need. Get your community or just yourself involved by hosting a food drive, fundraiser, or donate!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
