Notes from the Field - Multi-Family

October 21, 2021

Here's a special message from our Director of Multi-Family Programs, Bridget Foley.

Almost 5 years ago, we began with 8 properties in Seattle and San Francisco. Since then, Move For Hunger's Apartment Community Program has grown to include more than 2,500 properties across the U.S. And we're just getting started.

Venue at DinkytownIt is no surprise that 2020 hit the multi-family industry hard. Many teams were affected and the Move For Hunger team was there to help as support for all of our multi-family network’s needs. Not only were engagement events cancelled, but trade shows & conferences took the biggest hit - something that is the backbone of the multi-family industry. Move For Hunger continued our efforts for food collection & events to help our partners give back to their communities.

I'm happy to report that the apartment industry is back and better than ever, and leaders in the multi-family industry are excited to learn more about Move For Hunger! Our team has been safely traveling to some of the leading trade shows & conferences, speaking to the nation’s leading Property Management Companies, in addition to many state and local associations. Our goal is to get the entire industry involved so that we can rescue more food than we ever have before.

We have already exceeded goals in our industry for 2021, hitting the 100k lbs mark this year with our partners (our first time hitting this momentous milestone) & growing to a property count of 2,500 properties using the Move For Hunger program daily.

One of the reasons Move For Hunger has been so successful is its simplicity - we make it easy for people to do something good. Property Managers and onsite teams are able to use our program as leasing talking points, engagement of their residential community members, as well as give back to the communities they live & work in. It’s an easy choice for our corporate members to participate and use their impact as part of their Environmental, Social, and Governance initiatives,

To say that I am excited about the potential of this program would be a huge understatement. We are so proud of our network who has helped us collect more than 20 million meals of food over the last 12 years, but we know we are only scratching the surface of what we can accomplish. Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
