Northshore Moving won our hearts and Mover of the Month this February!

March 9, 2021

Each month, we love highlighting one of the moving companies in our network for their extraordinary commitment to fighting hunger in their community. Who won our heart this month? Northshore Moving Company, a United Van Lines agent located in Hammond, Louisiana, has been named February's Mover of the Month!

In 2021, we have completed so many food drives and food transports thanks to the help of our amazing movers. However, Northshore Moving has stood out amongst them all. On February 17, they answered a call from North Shore Food Bank and assisted in a food transport of 9,650 pounds! This food rescue provided 8,041 meals.

Northshore Moving.jpgIn Louisiana, over 750,000 people are struggling with hunger, with 270,000 of them being children. To make things worse, this past year two winter storms have wreaked havoc across the southern part of the United States. Northshore Moving said they knew they were needed.

“We work very closely with the nonprofits in our community, so we get firsthand insight to the struggles of our neighbors. In this case, we were honored to partner with a local food bank to secure almost 10,000 pounds of food that was desperately needed within the community. We’re scheduled to pick up another 10,000 pounds soon!” said Christopher Calamari of Northshore Moving Company.

Since joining the Move for Hunger team in 2019, Northshore Moving Company has collected a total of 15,401 pounds of food, providing almost 13,000 meals to those in need. “Partnering with Move For Hunger allows us to join in the mission of moving companies all over the country working together to reduce food waste, and fight hunger in our local community,” said Christopher Calamari. Thank you so much, Northshore Moving Company, for doing your part during these difficult times.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
