New Member Bria Apartments Donates 886 Pounds of Food and Earns June Community of the Month

July 8, 2021

Each month, Move For Hunger chooses a community that demonstrates commitment to the cause of hunger. This month, Bria Apartments in West Haven, Utah was awarded Community of the Month.

The Greystar property collected 886 pounds in just their first month of participation through move out donations alone! Properties normally collect food through one of our many food drives or they collect food when residents move out.

CORT, one of our best partners in the multi-family industry, helped transport the food to the Utah Food Bank. Their Salt Lake City location has already transported more food so far this year than all of last year.

“Team Bria felt like it was very important to give back to those in need and to bring our community together, our residents went above and beyond for meeting our goal to make sure those in need were taken care of,” said Laurent Wolff, a Community Manager. “Giving back is incredibly important especially right now because so many are facing hardships from Covid-19; job loss, shortened/cut hours, limited access to supplies, etc. Bria as a community felt like we could help by having each door donate as little as a can of food.”

We welcome Bria Apartments to our network, and they are not alone as multiple properties have joined us this year, and cannot wait to continue working with them. To fight against hunger we need all hands on deck. In Utah, the food insecurity rate is 11.1%, so about 1 in 10 people or 355,500 individuals face hunger.

We are thrilled with the results of their work, especially as Bria just joined Move For Hunger this year. Want to help fight hunger? You can donate, fundraise, or start a food drive.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
