Nelson Westerberg Continues to Champion Fight Against Hunger

September 24, 2024

Nelson Westerberg is officially returning as a partner with Move For Hunger for the 6th year! Since joining the Move For Hunger network in 2012, Nelson Westerberg has continuously shown their dedication to our mission, and in total have helped us deliver over 1.4 million lbs of food nationwide.

Founded in 1904, Nelson Westerberg rely on their over 110 years of relocation experience to provide premier local, long-distance, and international services to both households and businesses. Originally based in Illinois, they’ve expanded their reach to four other states: California, New Jersey, Georgia, and Texas. Each of these locations has played an active role in the ongoing battle against hunger.

Their support and efforts are always exceeding our expectations: This year alone they’ve transported over 351,000 lbs of food – an incredible impact equivalent to 292,900 meals! But that’s not all: Nelson Westerberg gifted an additional amount that’ll provide another 240,000 meals.

Year after year, Nelson Westerberg has been a proud supporter and participant in our Move2 Fight Hunger Challenge. Additionally, they consistently show up for our Food Recovery program and transporting nutritious food to those in need. This year Nelson Westerberg was named "Mover of the Year" because of their constant contribution to our mission.

Nelson Westerberg is truly passionate about supporting food recovery in their communities. Their dedication to high quality service, excellent communication, and true care for our mission makes them rockstar partners. Their GA team goes above and beyond and you can feel the genuine excitement of being able to give back and make a large impact. With a deep appreciation and gratitude for what they have, you can see and feel the passion in the way they give back.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
