Move For Hunger’s Network Delivers with Stamp Out Hunger, Providing Nearly 50,000lbs of Donations to Food Banks Across the Nation

June 22, 2022

The 30th Annual National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive returned this past May (after a brief hiatus due to COVID), providing Americans with an easy way to donate to local communities. Move For Hunger’s network stepped up to participate, transporting nearly 50,000lbs of food donations which provided more than 41,000 meals to residents in need across the country.

One of the nation’s largest one-day food drives, the goal is to provide food banks with donations to help them feed the 42 million food insecure Americans throughout the summer - one of the more difficult seasons for food banks and pantries, especially with school being out

Residents across the country were asked to leave a bag of nonperishable food donations next to their mailbox on Saturday, May 14th. Their mail carriers would then collect these food donations along their routes, which would then be redistributed to local food banks and pantries.

Eight moving companies in Move For Hunger’s mover network participated in the nationwide food drive by picking up donations from their local post office and delivering them to food banks.

Chipman Relocation Services, NOR-CAL Moving Services, and Gentle Giant Moving Company collectively transported nearly 7,500lbs of donations to the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano in Concord, California. Chipman Relocation Services provided nearly 2,000lbs, NOR-CAL Moving Services, an agent with Allied Van Lines, provided over 2,200lbs, and Gentle Giants provided nearly 3,300lbs, providing overNALC 2022 - Gentle Giant + FB Contra Costa -102.jpg 6,000 meals to those in need.

Ace Relocation Systems of Los Angeles transported nearly 4,000lbs, equaling over 3,200 meals, to the Community Action Partnership Orange County Food Bank, and Ace Relocation Systems of San Diego transported over 4,000lbs of donations, providing more than 3,300 meals to the San Diego Food Bank.

SeaCure Moving, a Bekins Van Line agent, transported over 7,000lbs of donations. This provides over 5,800 meals to the Greater Tuckerton Food Pantry, located in New Jersey.

Hopkins & Sons, based in Delaware, transported nearly 8,000lbs of donations, providing over 6,600 meals to the Food Bank of Delaware.

Last but not least, Palmer Moving Services in Michigan transported a total of 19,000lbs of donations to the Oakland Hope Food Bank! This will provide over 15,800 meals to those in need.

In total, the 30th Annual National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive collected over 600,000lbs of donations and more than $32,000 in donations for America’s food insecure communities. Thanks so much to our movers for being a small, but important part of it by providing 41,000 meals in this nationwide effort!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
