Move For Hunger Network Will Once Again Help Stamp Out Hunger

May 11, 2017

For 25 years, the National Association of Letter Carriers has organized its Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, the nation’s largest one-day food collection effort. On Saturday, May 13, residents are urged to leave donations of non-perishable food items on their porch or near their mailbox. Postal workers from across the country will be collecting the donations as they deliver mail along their route.

Over 10,000 cities and towns will participate in this year’s drive. As you can imagine, transporting the donations to local food banks/pantries is an enormous job, and our network has once again volunteered their time and resources to help. Thirty-five Move For Hunger partners from across the United States will be assisting with this year's event.

The timing of this massive food drive couldn’t be better. Food Banks face their greatest need during the summer months, when classes end and children are no longer receiving free or reduced-cost meals at school. In addition, every dollar that food banks can save on transportation is another dollar that can be spent on the lifesaving services they provide to their clients.

Don't forget to leave your donations on your front porch this Saturday! Contact your local post office to see if they are participating.

Our network would love to help YOU hold a food drive, too!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
