Move For Hunger and UniGroup Partner Together to Host UniGroup Truck Pull, Providing over 41,000 Meals to Those in Need

October 20, 2022

In September, UniGroup, the parent company of Mayflower Van Lines and United Van Lines, partnered with Move For Hunger to host theUnigroupTruckPull148-min.jpg FIRST UniGroup Truck Pull at the UniGroup Headquarters in Fenton, Missouri.

The event split company departments into teams for a friendly competition to collect canned goods and donations between employees. Congrats to the Logistics, Trans Advantage, and Member Success teams who won the top 3 fastest times in the truck pull!

In total, the event raised $13,485 and donated 8,814lbs of food, providing a grand total of 41,462 meals to those in need. The donations were transported by Dodge Moving and Storage, an agent for Mayflower Van Lines, to Operation Food Bank in St. Louis.

Wondering what a truck pull is? Consider it a modified tug-of-war, but instead of two teams of people competing against each other, it’s a team of 5-10 versus a moving truck that weighs up to 1,400 pounds. The goal of the team is to pull the truck a total of 100 feet in the quickest time possible. Whichever team has the fastest time is deemed the winner!

UnigroupTruckPull130-min.jpgWe’re incredibly thankful to UniGroup and their employees for hosting this event and raising awareness on food insecurity. In Missouri alone, nearly 700,000 people don’t know where their next meal will come from, including 1 in 7 children. Since joining the Move For Hunger network, both Mayflower Van Lines and United Van Lines have shown their dedication to fighting hunger, with each van line transporting about 1 million pounds of donations to food banks and pantries in need.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
