Move 2 Fight Hunger Challenge Week 1 Recap

June 11, 2024

Our annual challenge to move and fight hunger is back. Congratulations on finishing the first full week of the MOVE 2 Fight Hunger Challenge 2024

We’re off to a great start and we are ready to keep going! But before that, don’t forget:

  • Log your activity in the MoveSpring app and sync your wearable device. If you do not have a wearable device, in the MoveSpring app, click the “plus sign”, hit Manual Activity or Convert Activity, and enter your activity’s details.
  • For any other activities outside of walking/running, use the Activity Converter for a more accurate count. Again, ensure your device is turned off during the activity so you don’t double-count.
  • For all cycling miles/km, to keep the competition fair, activities such as cycling and spinning MUST BE converted and then manually inputted into the app.
    • If you have completed a spinning or cycling event, you MUST convert the miles you have completed first by dividing the number of cycle miles completed by 3 and then manually inputting the information into the app.
For example, if you completed 50 miles of cycling, you would divide 50 cycling miles by 3 to equal 16.7 miles.
    • The general rule of thumb is that there is a 1:3 run to bike ratio, meaning one mile of running at a moderate effort equals three miles of cycling at the same effort.
After you have converted the miles, you then must manually enter the miles using the Manual Feature in the app.
    • If you do not have a way to track your cycle or spin miles, you can use MoveSpring’s activity counter to obtain your miles; You must then take the cycle miles that the activity counter provides, divide by 3, and then manually input information into the app for proper conversion.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
