MOVE 2 Fight Hunger Challenge Week 4 Info and Winners

June 26, 2023

We’ve made it to the final week of the challenge!

Time has flown by and so much progress has been made along the way. Just 3 weeks ago, we started with one goal in mind: provide 165,000 meals to those in need. Thanks to each and every one of you, we have worked our way from 0 miles completed to over 148k meals provided so far!! Give yourselves a HUGE pat on the back; every single one of you has helped us get this far.

With 5 days left to go, our work isn’t done just yet! We have until Friday to raise the remaining 16,000+ meals in order to reach our community goal. Keep in mind that there are TONS of activities that count towards our goal: cleaning, reading, journaling, gardening, playing a board game, cooking… just to name a few!

It is more important than ever to keep track of all of these activities so we finish strong and reach our Challenge goal.

Did You Know 1 in 4 women are food insecure?

Women can often struggle with food insecurity as a result of the gender wage gap, the lack of a sufficient federal support system, and the fact that women normally take on the majority of childcare responsibilities. Click here to learn more

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
