Meridian at Braddock Station Feeds Families in Need During the Holidays, named Community of the Month for January 2023

February 23, 2023

Each month, Move For Hunger chooses a community that displays a dedication to ending hunger. For this January, the Meridian at Braddock Station was awarded Community of the Month!

Based in Alexandria, Virginia, the Meridian at Braddock Station is a Paradigm Management property and participated in the Paradigm Management Portfolio Season of Giving Food Drive at the end of 2022.

The food drive collected 420lbs of donations. This will provide 350 meals to the Capital Area Food Bank in Washington D.C., and was transported by Coleman Worldwide Moving, an Allied Van Lines agent.

“At Paradigm we truly believe that we have a responsibility to be good citizens and to give back to the communities in which our apartment buildings are located,” said Karen Kossow, Marketing Director of Paradigm Management. “Food collection is something that our site teams are able to do and that our residents want to do. We truly don’t believe that we would be able to make as large of an impact as we’ve been able to without Move For Hunger and their pick-up partners like our reps at CORT Furniture.”

The Meridian at Braddock Station has been a partner with Move For Hunger under the Paradigm Management umbrella since 2020. Since joining our network, they have collected nearly 2,000lbs of donations, equalling over 1,500 meals, for local food insecure communities.

Kossow continued, “We have to give a big shout-out to our residents as it’s their generosity that has allowed Meridian at Braddock Station and Paradigm Management to donate the volume of meals that we have since we began partnering with Move For Hunger in 2020.”

In Virginia, more than 650,000 people are food insecure, with over 1 in 10 children not knowing where their next meal will come from. We’re beyond grateful for every community that has joined us in the fight against hunger!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
