Meet Tobba Tlendea, Transportation Coordinator At Move For Hunger

April 25, 2024

Welcome to our Meet the Team series, where we’ll be introducing the Move For Hunger Staff 1 blog and 9 questions at a time. We hope you enjoy getting to know our team members as much as we enjoy working with them!

In this installment, we’re thrilled to introduce our newest team member and Transportation Coordinator, Tobba Tlendea! Tobba is committed to joining the fight against hunger and reducing food waste.

What Do You Do At Move For Hunger?

I’m the Transportation Coordinator for the ‘West Coast’ (western half of the continental US). I oversee food pick-up requests from Food Drive events and move-outs in this region. I use Salesforce to organize data and communicate heavily through email to movers and apartments. I started very recently on April 2nd, 2024, thus I am still learning the ropes and familiarizing myself with all the makings of my position. I joined the DEI committee too.

Why did you join Move For Hunger?

For over 10 years, food accessibility has circulated through my life as a major interest, from personal experiences with food insecurity and from several community service projects focused on providing food to those in need. Of all social causes, food accessibility is one I’m particularly passionate about, and I instantly felt a connection when reading the job post for my role. Having worked in various nonprofit and for-profit organizations, I’ve resonated most with roles focused on communal togetherness. Move For Hunger felt like a synthesis of the best aspects of my previous companies.

What do you like about working at Move For Hunger?

Wholly, I like the premise of our work to reduce food waste and contribute to hunger reduction. Day-to-day, I enjoy the opportunities we have to connect beyond the labor, through committees and other support channels. So far, everyone I’ve met has been kind, helpful, and reliable.

What’s something that you’re working on right now that you’re excited about?

My Saturn Return! A lot of what led me to Move For Hunger includes orienting my life towards growth, maturity, and perseverance. At 27 (28 next week!), I feel particularly connected right now to my astrological chart and embodying the ways I’m constantly changing.

Who has influenced you the most?

Janet Jackson! Across her music, dancing, fashion, philanthropy, and kindness, she is perhaps my greatest influence.

What food could you eat every day and never get tired of?

Tie: Greasy french fries & a sweet juicy orange.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?

"You don’t get what you don’t ask for."

What’s your favorite movie?

Childhood favorite: Grease
Adult favorite: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
