Meet Sarah Allen, Director of Marketing at Move For Hunger

January 22, 2025

Welcome to our Meet the Team series, where we’ll be introducing the Move For Hunger Staff 1 blog and 9 questions at a time. We hope you enjoy getting to know our team members as much as we enjoy working with them!

Let's get to know more about Sarah Allen, Director of Marketing, at Move For Hunger! With a decade of experience in nonprofits, Sarah is a marketing connoisseur that's passionate about making a difference.

What do you do at Move For Hunger?

As Director of Marketing, I lead all efforts to increase long-term visibility and engagement with our network, while building up the Move For Hunger brand.

Why did you join Move For Hunger?

Move For Hunger has a simple and unique value proposition - to help communities in need by donating your extra food. Working in nonprofits for the last decade, I jumped at the opportunity to bring more awareness to hunger and food waste in the U.S.

What do you like about working at Move For Hunger?

I am honored to work with such passionate and talented people each day, with team members who have dedicated their time and energy to such an important cause. And despite being remote, the org has created a wonderful sense of community, whether through paint ‘n sip gatherings or murder mystery parties!

What’s something that you’re working on right now that you’re excited about?

We’ve put together some much needed updates for the website - better showcasing our current work, and making it more accessible to our network. We want people to get to know us for who we are today, not who we were five or ten years ago, and this is part of that process. Check out our site later next month to see the updates! I’m also a big data junky, and we have several projects in the pipeline to track user journeys and behaviors that I can’t wait to dive into with my team.

Who has influenced you the most?

Without hesitation - my mom. Her selflessness and thoughtfulness inspire me each day to listen more and hold space for people, thoughts, and feels. She’s the toughest person I know, and has handled so much with such grace and without complaint. She’s also quite sassy and sarcastic - not everyone knows this about her! I could only ever aspire to be half the woman she is.

What food could you eat every day and never get tired of?

Steamed shrimp dumplings with a little chili oil. Salmon rolls would be a very, very close second.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?

Step back and think bigger. I used to spend a considerable amount of time wound up on minute details, but managed to figure out my place as a leader by focusing on a wild goal and then working backward to make it happen. This made all the difference - that and consistently tying each project and task to larger organizational objectives.

What’s your favorite movie?

In what season? In what genre? To watch repeatedly or a film that made a lasting impact? I struggle with these kinds of questions to no end, but if I have to say, I’m going with a movie I can watch any time of year and it gives me a smile: 10 Things I Hate about You. Gotta appreciate a sharp Shakespearean comedy, and any film that opens with a Joan Jett number.

Make sure to check back in soon to meet new members of our team, and follow our social channels (@moveforhunger) to stay up to date on hunger news and the impact our network is making!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
