Meet Meagan O’Malley, Special Events & Engagement Manager at Move For Hunger

June 12, 2024

Welcome to our Meet the Team series, where we’ll be introducing the Move For Hunger Staff 1 blog and 9 questions at a time. We hope you enjoy getting to know our team members as much as we enjoy working with them!

We’re excited to introduce you to our Special Events & Engagement Manager, Meagan O’Malley! Driven to give back, Meagan helps us cultivate positive change every day at Move For Hunger.

What Do You Do At Move For Hunger?

I am the Special Events and Engagements Manager here at Move For Hunger. I help our friends and partners find their inner architect through our ArCANtecture events, their strengths through our Truck Pulls, their hidden knowledge through trivias, and challenge their competitive spirit through our Move2 events - to name a few! I work closely with our Move For Hunger team to deliver memorable and fun events while also educating on food insecurity and food waste.

Why did you join Move For Hunger?

I had been working in the for-profit sector, but really wanted a role where I more directly felt I was directly giving back to help make someone's life better. I learned about Move For Hunger, and was immediately inspired by the work the organization does to help combat hunger - in a meaningful, impactful and straightforward way.

What do you like about working at Move For Hunger?

I love our team and the different personalities, backgrounds, perspectives and experiences that everyone brings. We are all united in our goals to help address the hunger and food waste issues we face, but all come with different ideas and solutions. Also…no day is the same, and no one is "stuck" in one particular role. We're a team able to adapt and shift as appropriate.

What’s something that you’re working on right now that you’re excited about?

Our events always get me excited! Last year, we introduced Meal Kits into our event offerings - teams put together meals intended to feed a family of 4, and those meals are donated to the local food bank or pantry. The Meal Kits have been a hit this year! We're always looking at ways to improve, add or adapt our events!

Who has influenced you the most?

My mom, for her strength and humor. My husband Ed for his creativity, kindness and love, and the Move For Hunger team for their ideas, perspectives and passion.

What food could you eat every day and never get tired of?

Fresh fruit and veggies or Thai - any sort of noodles.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?

“Don't sweat the small stuff - it's ALL small stuff!"

What’s your favorite movie?

Hmmm…hard one!
Childhood: "Grease"
Any good Rom-Com… How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days, Sweet Home Alabama, Love Actually.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
