Meet Hannah Lane, Development Manager At Move For Hunger

May 22, 2024

Welcome to our Meet the Team series, where we’ll be introducing the Move For Hunger Staff 1 blog and 9 questions at a time. We hope you enjoy getting to know our team members as much as we enjoy working with them!

This time we’re introducing our fantastic Development Manager, Hannah Lane. With a heart for change, Hannah is dedicated to fundraising efforts necessary to help bring more meals to those facing food insecurity.

What Do You Do At Move For Hunger?

I’m the Development Manager here at Move For Hunger. In my role, I have a big focus on our donor data, but I also work really closely with our team to implement a variety of fundraisers and provide opportunities for engagement to individuals who want to donate to Move For Hunger, either as a recurring donor in our Sustaining Donor Network, as an attendee of one of our events, or even as a runner on Team Move For Hunger! I think my favorite part of all of those things is working with our Team Move For Hunger runners - I really enjoy getting to support them on their fundraising journeys as they train for endurance races across the world (that’s right, Team Move For Hunger has gone INTERNATIONAL!) and prepare to turn their miles into meals. Their dedication really inspires me!

Why did you join Move For Hunger?

Growing up I’ve always known that I wanted to work in the nonprofit sector, because it gives the work that I’m doing each day a purpose. While I was fortunate to grow up with enough food on the table, I realize that that’s not the case for a lot of folks in our community, and I want to help change that!

What do you like about working at Move For Hunger?

This team is never afraid to dream big and back down from a challenge. It’s a really cool experience to be part of things I never thought would be possible (example: I was part of the process helping to plan and implement Topple Hunger last year, and got to be there when Move For Hunger officially set a world record!). Our team pushes me to think outside the box and be creative, and for that I will always be grateful.

What’s something that you’re working on right now that you’re excited about?

The answer is always Team Move For Hunger! We’ve got a few races left on the calendar this year that are in need of runners (raise your hand if you need a reason to travel to Ireland, Greece or Hawaii!), and I’m already starting to build out the calendar for 2025. I love being able to find new race opportunities for our runners, and I’m really excited to be able to share more about those soon!

Who has influenced you the most?

Back in high school, I was a part of student council, and our advisor, Mr. Lau is by far one of the people who I learned the most from. He taught me to be a leader, to be creative, to be able to speak in front of a crowd, and most importantly, to be my own biggest advocate. He taught me so many skills that have led me to where I am today. It’s because of him that I developed such a passion for service and ultimately student council was a key step toward my future career in nonprofit.

What food could you eat every day and never get tired of?

Pasta, 100%. There’s so many different variations, and it’s so easy to cook, so that’s definitely my go to choice!

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?

I think one of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever received would have to be that taking care of myself is, in and of itself, productive. It’s so easy to get caught up in the needs of everyone around me, and I have to remind myself (or be reminded by those closest to me) that I’m one person, and that I can only do so much, that my best is enough.

What’s your favorite movie?

I don’t know if I could ever pick just ONE favorite movie, there’s so many!! I’d have to say Mamma Mia is probably most consistently what I choose!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
