May's Mover of the Month Goes to Shleppers Moving & Storage

June 4, 2021

Each month, Move for Hunger highlights a Mover that demonstrates their dedication to ending hunger by doing their part in transporting the food. We are excited to announce that the Mover of the Month for May 2021 is Shleppers Moving & Storage

In May, Shleppers Moving & Storage of Bronx, NY helped move perishable farm-to-family food boxes totaling 16,200 pounds, or 13,500 meals, to Triumphant Church & B.I.C. in Brooklyn, NY. Farm to family food boxes provide families with produce, meat, dairy, and other perishable food. The nonprofit Infusion Media Group, or IGM, requested this transport. They help get food to over 80 NYC churches with pantries.

“Supporting the community and the people in need, especially with a basic element in life which is food, and society cannot exist with people experiencing hunger,” said Raz Itzhaki, Co-CEO and Owner of Shleppers. “It’s something we care to do whenever we have the opportunity and we feel as [if] it’s an obligation for corporations and individuals that can afford it, [to] support people in need where the system failed.”

Shleppers Moving & Storage joined Move for Hunger back in October of 2015. We are grateful for the nearly 6 years of partnership and their decision to give back in this challenging time! Their all time total for pounds of food donated is 17,714, which is over 14,760 meals. In other words, the majority of their contributions were made just this year.

The food insecurity rate for New York state is 10.7%, meaning 2,090,550 people face food insecurity. In the New York City area, where they have an office, the food insecurity rate is higher at 12.5%, which means 1,054,580 people go hungry. With the support from Shleppers Moving & Storage, the community can fight against food insecurity.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
