Love + Relo Helps Provide Over 70,000 During Hunger Action Month

October 23, 2020

We couldn’t love Love+Relo more, the daily podcast for the relocation industry from the mastermind, Ben Cross. Ben is the Vice President of Business Development of University Moving & Storage, an agent of North American Van Lines, and during September’s Hunger Action Month, Ben went on a full-out blitz to help us tackle hunger.

Each Friday as part of his podcast, Ben would focus on fighting hunger. From interviewing some of the leading voices in food security to a Telethon fundraiser to virtual trivia using Kahoot, Ben did a little bit of everything to help get the word out and to raise money. We even co-branded a limited edition Love + Relo shirt where the proceeds went back to Move For Hunger.

"I never cease to be amazed at the generosity of the global mobility, relocation and moving industries,” Ben said. “We had done events before and on our own, but when a group of leaders comes together as the Corporate Action Network did, it's like putting together a Dream Team! I think it's easy to miss the opportunity that we each have, every day to make a difference. When we utilize the reach and influence of our companies, that impact becomes magnified.”

Ben also used his connections to get Kroger involved. The grocery chain matched up to $10,000. The entire month Love + Relo fundraised $30,000 which funds programs to provide over 70,000 meals.

“I was so grateful to Kroger as well who stepped up with an enormous matching donation, and all the companies who allowed their leaders the time to work the phones!"

We couldn’t thank Ben and the Love + Relo community enough. That money will go a long way to help fight the hunger crisis in America which has gotten worse since the start of the pandemic.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
