July 2020 Mover of the Month: Gentle Giant Moving Company

August 14, 2020

Each month, we highlight one of the moving companies in our network for their extraordinary commitment to fighting hunger in their community. We are excited to announce that Gentle Giant Moving Company has been named our Mover of the Month for July 2020!

Gentle Giant has always been an incredible partner of ours since 2015, but they have especially stepped up during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide hunger relief to various organizations. Even with their non-essential workers working remotely, they have made it so easy to help us fight hunger.

Over the past few months, Gentle Giant has helped Move For Hunger & GoGo SqueeZ donate over 30,000 pouches of nutritious food to Boston, Philadelphia, and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. We could have not transported this food without their help, and during this time it is so needed.

Working together with GoGo SqueeZ, Gentle Giant offices in Somerville, MA, Philadelphia, PA, and Fort Lauderdale, FL transported over 17,000 pounds of food to local food banks. This is enough to provide over 14,000 meals to those in need. Since joining in 2015, Gentle Giant Moving Company has provided over 350,000 meals to those in need.

We can’t thank Gentle Giant Moving Company enough for their support over the years and for stepping up to transport food during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now is a time more than ever that we rely on our moving partners to help fight hunger, as food banks across the nation are seeing extremely high demand. Congratulations Gentle Giant and thank you!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
