July 2020 Community of the Month: Churchill Apartments

August 13, 2020

Move For Hunger is proud to announce that Churchill Apartments, an RMK Management community, has been named our Community of the Month for July 2020!

Churchill Apartments joined our Multi-Family Program in September of 2018, but over the course of these last few months, Churchill Apartments has donated more non-perishable food donations than they ever have before. As the need for emergency food assistance has grown exponentially due to the implications of COVID-19 pandemic, Churchill Apartments has continuously responded. At the start of the pandemic, they donated over 200 pounds to the local food bank and matched that donation again just last month! In July, residents at the Minneapolis, MN property donated over 200 pounds of food. All of the food was brought to the Community Emergency Service and should provide approximately 166 meals back to the community.ChurchillApartmentsSpringIntoActionFooddrive2020.jpg

"The team at Churchill personally know people in our community who have lost their income due to the current pandemic.” said Troy Baguhn, Property Manager for Churchill Apartments. “COVID-19 is something we, along with many others, were not prepared for, but we want to help our community in any way possible.”

Troy highlights how important it is to be aware of our surroundings and the significance of joining together to make a change.

“The Churchill team and many of our residents recognize the needs in our community and have been generous in donating to such an important cause. Knowing the donations will be used to support local families in need makes the cause even more personal to many of us,” Troy said. “When the staff and residents see people in need we all jump in and help in any way possible to make it successful.”

For many, drawing together and seeing the difference that community efforts can make has been a beacon of hope during this pandemic. Churchill Apartments has been exemplary in this aspect.

Congratulations to all Churchill Apartments staff and residents on this well-deserved recognition! Thank you for helping us reduce food waste and fight hunger in Minneapolis!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
