HD Supply Donates Over 10,000 Meals

December 4, 2020

Why do just a food drive when you can do a fundraiser as well? HD Supply had that exact thought this past October when they took on the challenge of both. In the span of just a few weeks, the Atlanta-based company donated over 10,000 meals to those in need.

Fourteen HD Supply offices and distribution centers led the charge by hosting a food drive in their own cities including Atlanta, Chicago, Kansas City, Denver, and several others. Atlanta brought in the most food at nearly 1,500 lbs with Los Angeles not far behind at around 1,000 lbs.

All of the food drives combined collected a total of 4,324 pounds of food (3,600 meals).

On the fundraiser front, HD Supply hosted a GoFundMe online fundraiser encouraging its employees to donate to the cause. With the goal set at $2,500, the team ended up raising $1,875 from 47 individuals, and HD Supply generous matched $1,000. That’s good for nearly 7,000 meals.

The 10,000 total meals will take a good-sized bite out of hunger this year which could prove to be the worse in recent memory for the hunger crisis. A total of around 54 million Americans are struggling to get food including 1 in 8 people in Georgia.

“Giving back is a core value at HD Supply and we know that the best leaders serve their people and communities. HD Supply provides service for our customers that keep the communities running and also serves to improve the people’s lives in those communities. This year, many people across the nation face food insecurity and we take pride in living out our values by giving back.”

HD Supply is in its first year of collaborating with Move For Hunger and has hit it out of the park already with its first big event. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for the partnership.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
