Hampton Roads Moving and Storage transports more than 260,000 meals for the 25th Annual Mayflower Marathon Thanksgiving Food Drive

December 22, 2021

What better way to get into the giving spirit than participating in the 25th Annual Mayflower Marathon Thanksgiving Food Drive?

The annual Thanksgiving Food Drive is hosted by a pair of local radio stations in Suffolk and Virginia Beach, Virginia. The event is a 3-day foodMayflower Marathon1 drive that took place from November 19-21, where residents drop off food at one of four locations - 3 on the lower peninsula of southeast Virginia and one on the southside, also known as South Hampton Roads. The event relies heavily on volunteers to transport the food, with one of those volunteers being Hampton Roads Moving and Storage.

Hampton Roads Moving and Storage has been part of Move For Hunger for the past several years. They won a Mover of the Month award in January of 2021 and are regularly active in the fight against hunger with events like Fill-A-Truck, Golf Outings, and their yearly signature event - the Mayflower Marathon.

This year, Hampton Roads Moving and Storage collected and transported more than 315,000lbs Mayflower Marathon2of donations, equalling more than 260,000 meals, from two drop-off points to the Virginia Peninsula Food Bank and the Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore.

“We are always so thankful and grateful for the outpouring of generosity from our community, whose donations will bring joy and nourishment into the lives of those experiencing food insecurity across the greater Peninsula,“ said Karen Joyner, CEO of Virginia Peninsula Foodbank, in an interview by Wavy. “Being able to put a healthy meal on the table is a basic need that will now happen for thousands of families because of these donations.”

Since the pandemic, food insecure communities, food banks, and food pantries have taken an exceptionally hard hit, with a rise in prices and supply chain issues impacting their abilities to do their jobs. In Virginia alone, almost 800,000 people are food insecure, with 1 in 9 children not knowing where their next meal is coming from. But with your help, we can put an end to hunger!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
