Hampton Roads Moving & Storage Awarded as the December Mover of the Month

January 11, 2021

Each month we like to recognize one member of our amazing mover network as our Mover of the Month and for this month, Hampton Roads Moving & Storage

Hampton Roads, an Atlas agent, has been a part of Move For Hunger for several years transporting food and holding several events like a Fill-A-Truck, Golf Outings, food drives at yoga studios, and their signature event, transporting food for the Mayflower Marathon, a 57-hour consecutive hour food and fund drive.

Hosted by a pair of local radio stations, the 24th annual edition of the marathon took place from November 20-22. Throughout the course of the weekend, local residents could drop off food at either one of two locations in Suffolk, Virginia and Virginia Beach. Between the two dropoff points, Hampton Roads collected and transported over 310,000 lbs of food which is the equivalent of about 260,000 meals. All of the food stayed locally and was taken to the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank and the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore.

Before the pandemic, nearly 200,000 people in southeast Virginia were struggling to get food in their stomachs, but those numbers were expected to dramatically increase during 2020. It’s estimated the nearly 50% more people will be considered food insecure because of the pandemic.

Because of the efforts from the local community, there won’t many empty stomachs this holiday season, but there’s also more work to be done.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
