GlobalGiving and Airbnb Award Move For Hunger the Community Fund Grant

July 29, 2021

Move For Hunger has some great news! We are a recipient of an Airbnb Community Fund grant, which were created to share the company’s success and strengthen communities around the world that Airbnb Hosts call home. Over the next decade, the Airbnb Community Fund will provide $100 million to support organizations around the globe working to help their communities. This year’s inaugural 150 recipients are doing work to support education, economic empowerment, and those impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.Airbnb Community Fund Grant Recipient

Since beginning in 2007, the Airbnb community has grown to 4 million Hosts who have welcomed more than 900 million guest arrivals. Airbnb worked with its Host community to determine how to direct grants. They received feedback from their Host Advisory Board to identify this years issues of focus. Additionally, the Host Advisory Board worked with GlobalGiving, Airbnb’s partner, to help create a list of organizations working on such areas, which were then presented to Airbnb Host Clubs around the world to be voted on.

Hunger is a persistent issue and in 2019, over 35,200,000 people faced food insecurity in the United States. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of individuals increased to 42 million. Thus, the grant came at a much-needed time.

This is the first time Airbnb is working with Move For Hunger and we appreciate their support. As part of the COVID Relief Efforts, last year GlobalGiving awarded Move For Hunger a $30,000 grant that helped provide nearly 76,000 meals.

The support from the Airbnb Community Fund and GlobalGiving will allow us to continue to help communities facing food insecurity with 126,500 meals.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
