A glance at the impact Move For Hunger’s Multifamily Program had in 2023!

February 9, 2024

Our Multifamily Program has continued to grow throughout 2023, with our network of Multifamily communities across the country now including more than 600,000 units! Our multifamily properties worked hard this year to host hundreds of food drives for their communities, collecting 154,646 lbs of food, equaling 128,871 meals, to food insecure individuals in need.

Amongst these food drives was our yearly Spread the Love Food Drive campaign, which Move For Hunger hosts in hopes of encouraging our communities to donate jars of peanut butter and jelly to fight childhood hunger. With our network hosting almost 60 Spread the Love Food Drives and Fundraisers, over 13,000 meals were donated to food banks and pantries all across the country!

Another amazing demonstration of our partners’ commitment to making a difference this year was CORT’s Thanksgiving Food Drive. Spanning over 30 locations across the US, CORT offices came together to collect over 6,000 lbs of food for those in need. In the end, their Thanksgiving food drive allowed for over 8,500 meals to be provided to people in need in communities throughout the country. CORT’s hard work and dedication to fighting hunger is a perfect example of how collective efforts allow us to make a meaningful difference in the lives of people.

Community of the Year:
Meridian at Ballston Commons

Each year, one of the properties we partner with goes above and beyond to fight hunger and is awarded the Community of the Year. This year, that award goes to Meridian at Ballston Commons! Across all of the 2,600 properties in our network, they have been chosen as top contributors of 2023!

Based in Arlington, Virginia, the Meridian at Ballston Commons, a Paradigm Management property, joined the Move For Hunger network in 2020. Over the past year, they have collected over 1000 pounds of donations. This brings their total collected donations since joining the network to more than 2,550 lbs, equaling over 2000 meals provided to locals in need!

In Virginia, over 700,000 people are food insecure, with more than 160,000 children not sure where their next meal will come from. We are extremely grateful for Meridian at Ballston Commons for their support in fighting hunger and congratulate them on the amazing impact they have made this year!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
