GivingTuesday fundraiser smashes record to provide more than 150,000 meals to food insecure communities

December 2, 2021

In the United States, over 42 million people go hungry every night, with 13 million children unsure where their next meal will come from. Hunger impacts every community, with about 21% of Black Americans, 18% of Hispanic Americans, 25% of Native Americans, and 11% of White Americans facing food insecurity every year. The impact of the pandemic has only increased the need for food assistance, causing five million more people in the United States to become food insecure.

While the holidays are a time of joy and celebration for many of us, it’s a time of uncertainty and hardships for others. Move For Hunger believes no one should go hungry during the holidays, which is why we embrace GivingTuesday! Our GivingTuesday campaign provides meals to families, children, seniors, and vulnerable communities who are facing hunger across the United States and Canada.

To make our impact even bigger, one of our partners, Chadwell Supply, agreed to match your donations up to $25,000 - making your gift twice as powerful. Chadwell Supply is a multi-family supply partner based in Tampa, Florida that joined the Move For Hunger network in 2020. Since their partnership began, they’ve supplied over 200,000 meals to those in need.

"The multi-family industry is in a unique position to reach struggling families, literally where they live,” said Pete Wheeler, VP of Marketing and Sales Enablement. “Move For Hunger is a very special representation of the true heart of this industry and we could not be more excited to be partners in their important mission."

We would also like to acknowledge the team at Mover Specialty Services for helping push us past our goal with their generous gift.

Move For Hunger set the GivingTuesday goal at $25,000, and we’re beyond excited to say that not only did we meet our goal - we surpassed it! With the help of everyone who donated, we topped last year’s record with over $30,000 in donations and are able to provide over 150,000 meals to people in need.

We extend a huge thank you to everyone who participated in GivingTuesday with us, as well as Chadwell Supply for their donation match! It’s because of your support that we are able to get food in the hands of people who need it most and work towards ending hunger!

If you missed your chance to donate on GivingTuesday, you can still support our cause by making a regular donation here!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
