Fun Food Waste Activities For Kids

Have you ever "forgotten" about a piece of fruit you left in the fridge only to find it covered with mold 2 weeks later? It's pretty much the worst! How about throwing away a can of soup because it was past the “best by” date stamped on the label? Or, even better, have you ever wondered what happens to all of the produce in the supermarket that goes unsold?

FoodFridgeSellbyDateFoodwaste.jpgAnswer: It goes to waste, along with 40% of the food in the United States that ends up in a landfill or is left to rot in the field.

And not only are we throwing food away, but we're doing it at a time when millions of people are going hungry. While this information might seem a bit depressing, the good news is there's something YOU can do about it.  And guess what, it won't cost you any money. In fact, it'll actually SAVE you money! But best of all, it's easy! So easy, in fact, that we put together some short activities for you to try at home with your kids to help you become food waste warriors. Yeh - we like the sound of that too!

So check it out, and let us know what you think. And if you could share a photo of you and your family participating on social media (and tag @MoveForHunger) we would be truly grateful!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
