Everything is bigger in Texas - even the hearts: Ward North American Agents Awarded September Mover of the Month

October 19, 2023

Every month, Move For Hunger recognizes a moving company that has exceeded our expectations. For the month of September, we are celebrating Ward North American as our September 2023 Mover of the Month!

A part of North American Van Lines, Ward North American has been an amazing contributor to fighting the injustice of food insecurity in Texas. With offices in Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, Houston, and Killeen, they’ve worked hard to provide more than 65,500 meals collaboratively since joining the Move For Hunger network.

More recently, two Ward North American locations participated in The Great NorthAmericanWard North American - 7 Eleven- Water Transport March 1st 20212.JPG Food Drive. The San Antonio location contributed 250 lbs of donations, with the Central Texas location raising 100 lbs of donations. They then delivered those donations to local food banks.

Collectively, this year’s Great North American Food Drive, an annual food drive for North American Van Lines across the country, provided nearly 30,000 pounds of donations, providing over 24,800 meals to food insecure communities.

In Texas, food insecurity is an alarming issue. There are over 4 million residents being affected (that’s nearly 14% of the population). We are fortunate to have hard working hunger fighting heroes at Ward North America to help feed communities in need.

Congratulations to Ward North American for being awarded Movers of the Month! If you are a mover and want to make a difference, please consider joining our Move For Hunger network.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
