ERA Central Realty Shaves The Day

July 23, 2020

For the past several weeks, the amazing folks at ERA Central Realty Group have been fundraising to support Move For Hunger. They have been long-time supporters of our work – holding a number of fundraisers and food drives over the years.  When the COVID-19 Pandemic initially hit earlier this spring, they were also one of the very first to reach out to help.
With no immediate end to the pandemic in sight, ERA Central Realty Group’s Broker / Owner, Scott Lauri, stepped up to challenge his team to take action. If you’d ever met Scott before, you’d know that he’s an incredibly generous guy, amazing leader, and man who also happens a full head of hair.  (Stay with me here!)

ERACentral-ScottLauriSHAVEStheday2020 (23).jpg"ERA Central Realty Group and Move For Hunger have been partners for years," said Scott. "When COVID-19 spread to central New Jersey, we knew right away that more people than ever in our communities were going to be facing food insecurities and wanted to help."  A few weeks ago he encouraged his team to make donations to support Move For Hunger’s work to fight hunger and food waste. But this wasn’t just a normal fundraiser. Scott split realtors into teams and told the winning team that they could choose his next hairstyle. A bold, yet hilarious, move for sure!

Well the results are in, and collectively, in 2020, Scott & ERA Central Realty Group raised more than $2,800 for Move For Hunger!  This is enough to provide more than 6,600 meals for individuals struggling with hunger.  Scott said, "Other than having my business partner, Stephanie Bellanova, give me a mohak, my favorite part of Shave the Day for Hunger was having an outdoor event where we could all relax and have fun, even if we were social distancing. Additionally, having Move For Hunger speak at the event helped our agents realize how widespread food insecurity is in our own backyard and compelled them to donate."

With food banks seeing dramatic increases in demand during the pandemic and an estimated 17 million more Americans expected to face food insecurity due to the troubled economy, these funds couldn’t come at a better time.  Scott and his team literally Shaved the Day!

During the pandemic, Move For Hunger has helped provide more than 1,000,000 meals to individuals in need. It is the generous support from individuals and companies like ERA Central Realty Group that helps fund Move For Hunger’s efforts to rescue more food and feed more families in need.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
