Dumbo Moving & Storage Provides 27,500 Meals to Hungry Communities in New York City

February 26, 2023

Over the past several years, Move For Hunger’s Mover Program has continued to step up in big ways to feed their hungry communities. Dumbo Moving & Storage, based in New York City, is a great example of the hard work our movers do to provide meals to those in need.WhatsApp Image 2023-02-21 at 10.34.08 AM (1).jpeg

Throughout the first two months of 2023, Dumbo Moving & Storage has completed 3 different pickups from multiple Trader Joe’s locations to collect produce and grocery items. So far, they’ve collected and transported 33,000 lbs of donations, providing 27,500 meals to food insecure communities in Brooklyn, NY.

These transportations started on January 2, 2023, when Move For Hunger received an urgent call from a long-time supporter and radio host of 96.3img Radio, Patrick Thorpe, seeking assistance to rescue food from 5 Trader Joe's stores in NYC to donate to multiple agencies including the Gotham Food Pantry.

Dumbo Moving jumped into action, committing to go to multiple locations to pick up 9,000 lbs of donations and deliver them for distribution to Gotham Food Pantry and other hunger relief agencies in Brooklyn. Upon receiving the food donations, Gotham Food Pantry immediately distributed the food to residents in NYC Public Housing - which make up some of the poorest neighborhoods in the country.

The first transport was so successful that the donations have continued! The second and third donation both were 12,000 lbs of donations, for a total of 20,000 meals provided. Every donation is needed considering in New York State over 1.8 million people are food insecure with the Food Bank of New York City serving more than 1.2 million people annually.

None of this would have been possible without the community joining forces and coming together, including the hard work of Patrick Thorpe with 96.3img Radio, for connecting Move For Hunger with these opportunities and to the Gotham Food Bank, Douglas Silver, Executive Director of the Gotham Food Pantry, for looking for food to rescue in NY, Luis and the whole crew at Dumbo Moving for responding to the call so quickly and doing all the heavy lifting, and Trader Joe's for allowing us to rescue the food to donate to people who need it most!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
