Cortland Bear Creek Builds its Way to September Community of the Month!

October 12, 2022

Cortland Bear Creek Can Castle FD 2022 (2) (1) (1) (1) (1).jpegEach month, Move For Hunger crowns one of our amazing multifamily communities with the title of Community of the Month. To be awarded, the community named has gone above and beyond, and we want to highlight all of the amazing work that is being done to help fight hunger!

For September of 2022, Move For Hunger is excited to announce that Cortland Bear Creek is our Community of the Month! We are so happy to have Cortland Bear Creek in our network of amazing companies, communities, movers and more! Cortland Bear Creek is managed by JVP Management and is located in Euless, Texas.

Cortland Bear Creek joined the Move For Hunger network back in May and has helped collect and donate nearly 850 lbs of food - over 700 meals! - to help feed their community! This September, Cortland Bear Creek held a Can Castle food drive where event participants brought in canned food donations, which were then used to creatively structure castles. Donations were then transported by Budd Van Lines - Southeast Operation Branch, part of Budd Van Lines

“I am so proud of my team and our community for being so involved in the food drive and so willing and eager to assist and give as much as they were able to help others and very proud to work for a company that encourages and allows us to participate in such a great program," said Trish Jenco, Community Manager. "We had such a great experience that the team has already started planning another food drive for the upcoming holidays.

We are so grateful for Cortland Bear Creek and all of their hard work this month. We’re excited for what food drives they’ll plan in the future with our partnership!

In Texas, more than 3.7 million people, including 1 in 6 children, are food insecure. Move For Hunger is working hard to eliminate hunger in Texas. Since our inception in 2009, we’ve delivered over 2 million lbs - more than 1.6 million meals - of food, with over 21,000 lbs, over 17,000 meals, in 2022 alone.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
