CORT Gets MOVING

August 17, 2020

CORT has been our partner for several years, and each year they find new ways to step up and show how truly valuable they are to us as an organization and to the fight against hunger. As COVID rattles our country and forces many of us into varying degrees of quarantining, CORT rose to the challenge with a virtual fundraiser that got us moving again, literally.

Over the past few weeks, CORT, the leader in home and office furniture rental, challenged its employees to get moving. This could be anything - walking, running, yoga, virtual bootcamp, biking, zumba, you name it. Once you complete an activity, an employee also donates to be part of the event. If an employee donated $25, they’d receive a Move For Hunger medal, Facebook frame, and a downloadable certificate commemorating their participation. If they donated $35, they’d also receive a Move For Hunger T-Shirt.

Since CORT has locations spread all across the country, there were people “moving” from Seattle to Miami to Boston and just about everywhere in between. Together, they raised over $2,800 which contributes roughly over 6,500 meals!

Those funds come at a critical time as food insecurity is on the rise across the country due to the pandemic. Every market where CORT is located is seeing unemployment increases and food banks are seeing 60% more people come through their doors, often for the very first time.

We are incredibly thankful for a partner like CORT who joined Move For Hunger several years ago and has since worked with us on their own events while transporting thousands of pounds from other events every single year.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
