Companies Rise to the Occasion to Raise Money to Support Hunger Relief Efforts

December 29, 2020

Because of the pandemic, the number of those who are food insecure is expected to increase by nearly 50% which would equal over 50 million Americans. That’s nearly 1 in 6 people in this country that are struggling to put food on the table every day. We’re fortunate enough to have amazing partners who not only commit to the cause as an organization to fight hunger but also empower their employees to get involved.

This past June, IOR Global, the leading provider of global mobility and talent development services, hosted a virtual fundraising event and Front Porch Food Drive. With their employees all working from home, 36 contributed to the fight to end hunger and collected nearly $1,500.  When you combine that with their socially distant Front Porch Food Drive where they collected 1,200 lbs, that brings their total of meals provided to 4,600 meals.

During September’s Hunger Action Month, Movers Specialty Services, a specialty provider in relocation, hosted their own virtual fundraiser and food drive with their employees who ended up raising and collecting over 1,800 meals. A partner of ours since 2014, we’ve worked with MSS on a variety of food drives, fundraisers, even truck pulls.

In October, Custom Movers Services held at Give Back event that raised nearly $3,500. Those funds will help provide almost 3,000 meals. Located just outside of Cleveland, the region has about a half-million going hungry before factoring in the rise from COVID. With the pandemic raging on, 40% of those visiting food banks are visiting for the first time.

Another Hunger Action Month fundraiser was held by AVE employees as they got out to MOVE for hunger. Employees could do just about anything to count as moving - walking, running, biking, even wakeboarding. The event raised over $1,000 which will help provide over 800 meals. While AVE has properties across multiple states, the company is based in Philadelphia where 16.3% of people are considered food insecure, one of the largest rates in the nation for a major city.

AVE wasn’t the only company that got moving this year, National Van Lines, one of the major van lines in the country, also encouraged its employees to get outside and get active. A member of our network since 2014, the company raised over $1,000 during May’s virtual fundraiser. Those funds will help provide nearly 1,000 meals at a time when about 1 in 4 kids is struggling to get food.

Just a few months later, FINCOR Construction followed in National Van Lines’s footsteps. Similar to previous MOVE fundraisers, employees of the multi-family renovation company were encouraged to get active this time during September’s Hunger Action Month. Employees could take their dog for a walk, do yoga, go for a run, etc. As they were active, they were also encouraged to donate to the fundraiser which ended up collecting over $1,000 from about 20 people that participated.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
