Colorado Hi-Tec Moving & Storage Rescues 8,000+ lbs. of Food on Memorial Day

June 6, 2017

On Memorial Day, thousands of joggers, walkers, and runners participated in the 39th annual Bolder Boulder 10k Classic road race in Colorado. Our friends at Colorado Hi-Tec Moving and Storage Inc., a Wheaton agent, took time out of their holiday to attend the race and rescue more than 8,000 lbs. of non-perishable food!

If you have ever participated in a marathon, 5k, or any other endurance race, you would probably figure that an event as large as this would be a great opportunity to rescue and recover a lot of food, and that's exactly what happened. With more than 49,000 participants crossing the finish line, there has to be enough food and drink for them to replenish and hydrate at the end of the race.

Much of that food, however, goes unused is typically thrown out afterward. From water bottles and sports drinks to boxes of fruit and energy bars, all of this leftover food was recovered by Colorado Hi-Tec's crew and transported to the Community Food Share.

One of Move For Hunger’s goals for 2017 is to take part in rescue events that can divert tens of thousands of pounds of food from the landfill to the food bank. The amount of food recovered by Colorado Hi-Tec Moving & Storage will hopefully serve as motivation for the rest of our network to make a similar contribution to our fight against hunger and food waste.

Nearly 700,000 people in Colorado are food insecure, including 1 in 7 children. Thank you to Colorado Hi-Tec Moving and Storage for taking the time out of your Memorial Day to help change those statistics.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
