Caroo & Economy Movers Combine to Transport over 26,000 Meals Earning Economy Movers Mover of the Month

August 5, 2021

Last month Economy Movers of Fresno, California and Caroo, the employee recognition business, teamed up to make a big impact in the Golden State. The food transport earned Economy Movers July’s Mover of the Month Award and for Caroo, the latest donation adds to the impressive total of food donations they’ve contributed over the past 12 months.

Economy Movers, a new member as of this past May, transported more than 31,200 pounds of non-perishable food (more than 26,000 meals) from Caroo to the Central California Food Bank in July. The food bank offers a number of programs, including ones for seniors, the BackPack program for school age children, and Groceries2Go.

“Economy Movers is dedicated to giving back to our local community here in the Central Valley of California,” said Mary Kate Johnson, a Manager at Economy Movers. “When we heard about Move for Hunger and its mission, it just made sense! We are in people's homes every day helping with their moves - what an easy way to reach people and ask them for food donations, especially when a lot of these food items might just go to waste during the moving process! We are so excited to be able to donate these food items to the Central California Food Bank and help fight hunger in our community!”

They have been an amazing supporter of Move For Hunger since 2020. In total, Caroo, formerly SnackNation, has donated more than 102,500 pounds of food, about 85,400 meals. This year alone they have donated 83,500 pounds of food, far surpassing last year’s already incredible total of 19,000 pounds. Back in February of this year, Caroo worked with Dependable Supply Chain Services to donate 28,000 pounds of nonperishable food, or about 23,300 meals, also to Central California Food Bank. With help from Daniel’s Logistics, LLC, Caroo donated over 5,000 pounds of food to Fresno Mission and over 7,000 pounds of food to Central California Food Bank this past February. Additionally, Caroo donated 19,000 pounds of food to Touch New Jersey Food Pantry - Distribution Site in October of last year as part Move For Hunger's COVID relief efforts.

Caroo offers various boxes that can be purchased to demonstrate appreciation for your employees, loved ones, clients, and event goers. Items to choose from include snacks, electronics, and office supplies. Custom boxes are even an option.

In Fresno, California, nearly 145,000 people, or more than 1 in 7 individuals, face food insecurity while over 4,000,000 people are food insecure across the state alone making it one of the worst states in the country for food insecurity. The challenges have been exacerbated by the pandemic leaving millions of people out of work.

“With everything that has happened in the last year and a half, more people are struggling in so many ways, including hunger and food insecurity,” said Johnson. “Every little bit counts and the more that we can do for each other as a community, the better! These food donations can help thousands of families in the Fresno area, and we are happy to be a part of that. We look forward to our continued partnership with Move for Hunger!”

We appreciate the hard work from Economy Movers and Caroo. If you are interested in taking part in the fight against hunger please consider donating, fundraising, or starting a food drive

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
