Beltmann Relocation Group Rescues 21,800 LBS. of Food from the Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon

February 15, 2019

This January, more than 16,000 runners participated in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon & ½ Marathon that covered the cities of Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Tempe.

Just as in most races, participants were greeted at the finish line with snacks and drinks. Unfortunately, many times, the leftovers go to waste, contributing to the 40% of food produced in the United States that ends up in a landfill every year.

At this race, however, our friends from the Phoenix branch of Beltmann Relocation Group rescued a grand total of 21,800 lbs. of food and beverages and delivered it all to the St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance.

Beltmann Relocation Group’s Phoenix location has been partners with Move For Hunger since 2012. Last year, they rescued 7,796 lbs. of food and beverages at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon & ½ Marathon.  They have participated in a number of food drives and have collected a lifetime total of 41,651 lbs. of food and beverages.  That’s enough for 34,709 meals!

More than one million people in Arizona, including 1 in 5 children, struggle with food insecurity. Thank you to Beltmann Relocation Group for always lending a helping hand to your neighbors in need!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
