Beltmann Relocation Group of Phoenix Rescues 7,800 LBS. of Food From Marathon

February 1, 2018

Our first food rescue of 2018 is in the books, thanks to the team at Beltmann Relocation Group of Phoenix, who recovered 7,800 lbs. of granola bars, snacks, and water from the Arizona Rock 'n' Roll Marathon and Half Marathon on January 14. All of the donations were delivered to St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance, which provides more than 12 million pounds of food to nearly 500 partner agencies in Arizona every year.

If you've ever participated in or attended an endurance event like a marathon, you probably aren't surprised to hear that there is the potential for a lot of food waste. Athletes need to refuel after burning thousands of calories, so there always have plenty of food and beverages available near the finish line. The organizers typically order far more than they could ever possibly distribute and if it wasn't for movers like Beltmann Relocation Group, those leftovers might simply be thrown in the trash. Since 2014, however, our network has rescued more than 634,000 lbs. of food/drinks from races all across the country and delivered them to local food banks.

It's unacceptable that 40% of the food in the United States each year is wasted when more than 42 million Americans are facing hunger. Thank you to Steve Rinaldo and the rest of the team at Beltmann Relocation Group of Phoenix for working to address both of these urgent problems.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
