AVE Tackles Hunger Action Month!

November 14, 2018

AVE is a leading corporate housing provider has always been one of our favorite partners. Since joining our network back in 2015, AVE has held food drives every September to celebrate Hunger Action Month. This year, they helped us tackle hunger in a whole new way.

AVETacklingHungerFoodDrive_HAM2018_WalnutCreek(2).jpgAll 14 of AVE's properties in New Jersey, suburban Philadephia, and California participated in this year's food drive, which ran from August 15-September 30. To help drive donations, many of the properties held tailgate parties for the start of football season and asked that guests bring non-perishable items to help support the effort.

AVE's goal was to collect 1,000 lbs. of food between all of the properties. We're happy to report that, not only did they hit that mark, they nearly doubled it! The properties collected 1,900 lbs. of food overall, which is enough to provide 1,580 meals!

“AVE is a proud partner of Move For Hunger," said Lea Anne Welsh, COO, Korman Communities; President, AVE. "Our teams really go above and beyond to organize a fun event every year to really drive those donations. Our team members, residents, and partners are so generous. Since 2015, we’ve collected 9,795 pounds of food, which will provide 8,163 meals.”

AVETacklingHungerFoodDrive_HAM2018_union.jpgThe food drive would not have been possible without the help of several of our moving partners, who donated boxes for the collection and volunteered to deliver all of the donations to the local food banks. Wayne Moving & Storage, an Atlas Van Lines agent, volunteered to pick up the donations from 3 properties and delivered them all to the West Chester Food Cupboard.

Gentle Giant Moving Company of Philadelphia also picked up the food from 3 locations and delivered it all to Philabundance.

Crown Relocations of New York helped out by picking up the donations from 3 properties and delivering them to the Community FoodBank of New Jersey.

Main Street Movers, a Bekins agent, picked up the donations from the Florham Park location and delivered them to the Community FoodBank of New Jersey.

Two Men & A Truck of West Chester/Philadelphia picked up the donations from the Landsdale property and delivered them to Manna on Main Street.

In California, Anderson Bros. Movers picked up the donations from AVE's Walnut Creek property and delivered them to the Food Bank Contra Costa Solano, while Shamrock Moving & Storage of San Francisco picked up the donations from the Emeryville location and delivered them to Second Harvest Santa Clara & San Mateo.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
