August 2018 Mover of the Month: Gentle Giant Moving Company of Philadelphia

September 4, 2018

Each month, we highlight one of the moving companies in our network for their extraordinary commitment to fighting hunger in their community. We are excited to announce that Gentle Giant Moving Company of Philadelphia has been named our Mover of the Month for August 2018!

Over the past several years, food banks have started making a greater effort to provide their clients with less "junk food" and more fresh produce. It's a great idea in theory, but it can be difficult to accomplish in practice. Fresh fruits and vegetables, obviously, aren't as shelf-stable as the canned variety.Farm to Food Bank Gleaning partnerships, like the one between A.T. Buzby Farm and Philabundance, offer a solution to the problem.

If you aren't familiar with gleaning, it's the ancient practice of gathering leftover crops after a harvest and providing them to people in need. A.T. Buzby Farm opened its fields to volunteers every Monday in August and allowed them to pick as many ears of fresh New Jersey corn as they could for their neighbors in need.

The only problem? Getting that corn from the farm to one of Philabundance's partner agencies. That's where Gentle Giant Moving of Philadelphia comes into the picture. Gentle Giant dispatched one of their trucks and made the 40-minute drive south to the A.T. Buzby Farm on three Mondays in August. After the volunteers had finished, Gentle Giant's crew loaded all of the corn into the trailer headed back north.

Touch New Jersey, a food pantry in Camden, was Philabundance's receiving agency for this gleaning and had arranged for the corn to be dropped off at a local business, Miguel's Pharmacy. Gentle Giant was able to deliver the corn directly to the Pharmacy, and it was distributed later that same day. Because of Gentle Giant's generosity, thousands of pounds of corn that was on the stalk in the morning was being passed around dinner tables later that evening.

More than 7,000 lbs. of corn was picked during the 3 days in August that Gentle Giant participated in the gleaning. According to Philabundance, every 1 pound of produce donated enhances 1 meal. Gentle Giant, then, helped to enhance more than 7,000 meals! That's an incredible impact for just a couple of hours of service! Needless to say, when it came time to choose our Mover of Month for August, it was an easy decision.

In addition to the award, Gentle Giant Moving Company of Philadelphia will also be receiving a special gift from Victory Packaging and Move For Hunger truck decals for their entire fleet. Congratulations to Gentle Giant Moving of Philadelphia on this much-deserved recognition. Thank you for your commitment to reducing food waste and fighting hunger!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
