Atlas Van Lines Takes A Bite Out Of Hunger With Shark Week Food Drive

August 1, 2018

Sharks might not like to share their food, but our friends at Atlas Van Lines sure do! Throughout Shark Week (July 22-29), Atlas Van Lines held a food drive at their offices in Evansville, IN to collect cans of tuna in honor of the fish-themed week.

And what’s not to love about tuna? This superfood is packed with protein and is a great source of iron and potassium. It’s also one of the most requested food items at food pantries around the country.

These movers did a fin-tastic job of collecting 100 lbs. of food and personally delivering all of the donations to the Tri-State Food Bank. Atlas Van Lines’s contributions will help provide meals to the more than 900,000 people, including 1 in 7 children, who are food insecure in Indiana. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate Shark Week than to use the week to raise awareness about food insecurity and take action to fight hunger!

Thank you to everyone at Atlas Van Lines for really sinking your teeth into a great cause!

Would you like to host your own food drive this summer? We can help!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
