Assurant Employees Take Part in ArCANtecture Competition

November 1, 2019

On October 23, we visited our partners from Assurant at their offices in Miami to hold our first-ever ArCANtecture competition!

AssurantArCantectureCanstruction2019 (33).jpgWe announced our partnership with Assurant, a global provider of housing and lifestyle solutions that support, protect and connect major consumer purchases, at the National Apartment Association's Apartmentalize Conference in June. Assurant has pledged to help us reduce food waste and fight hunger because they are a company that believes that, "supporting our communities through giving and volunteerism increases employee engagement and reinforces our commitment as a responsible corporate citizen."

Before the competition began, our Executive Director, Adam Lowy, and Director of Development, Margo Cianchetta, spoke to the Assurant staff about hunger and food waste in the United States. During the presentation, they also explained how Assurant and its employees could help Move For Hunger create sustainable solutions to both problems.

The ArCANtecture competition was a fun way to introduce Move For Hunger to Assurant's team and to build excitement about our partnership. Employees built houses using cans of food -- which were generously provided by our friends at Feeding South Florida -- and were judged based on their creativity, the amount of food they used, and the stability of their design. The winning team received medals and secured bragging rights for the rest of the year!

We believe that serving your community can and should be a joyful experience, and that's why we work with our partners to organize fun team-building events like this one. Thank you to the entire Assurant team for everything you're doing to support our hunger relief and food rescue programs. We look forward to working together for years to come!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
