Apex Moving & Storage Collects Nearly 6,600 LBS. of Food in Just a Few Hours!

September 11, 2018

State fairs are a summer tradition for many and a staple for making memories. There are the rides and attractions, prizes to be won, and the smell and sight of summer favorites such as cotton candy, corn dogs, and pretzels. Our friends at Apex Moving & Storage, a Stevens agent, have been assisting with the Washington State Fair's Opening Day Food Drive for several years.

There was an awesome incentive to help drive donations: anyone who donated food during the first two hours on the first day of the fair was given free admission, a strategy that has proven to be successful again and again. Nearly 6,600 lbs. of food was collected at the entrance that Apex was in charge of, which is enough to provide 5,660 meals! More than 13,000 lbs. of food has been collected by Apex's involvement over the past 2 years. All of the donations go to support the Puyallup Food Bank and their mission to feed their neighbors in need.

The outcome of this food drive showcases how food banks and local organizations can come together to fight food insecurity and aid their communities. Contact Raquel to learn more about building relationships with your local food bank.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
