Alexander's Mobility Services Rescues 16,000 LBS. of Food/Drinks from Race in Nashville

May 17, 2019

On April 26, approximately 30,000  runners and walkers, from ages 12 to 95, took to the streets of the "Music City" for the 2019 St. Jude Rock 'n' Roll Nashville Marathon & 1/2 Marathon.

If you have ever participated in a race or walk, chances are you were handed a granola bar, a piece of fruit, or bottle of water at the finish line. It's so important for the athletes to refuel after pushing themselves to the limit, so race organizers stock up on these healthy treats for runners and walkers to replenish some of the calories they burned off after the event. Unfortunately, they typically order too much of these snacks, which results in a lot of perfectly good food getting thrown out.

However, at this race, the Nashville branch of Alexander's Mobility Services, an Atlas Van Lines agent, rescued 16,000 lbs. of food and beverages from the event and delivered it all to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee.

More than 346,000 people in the Greater Nashville area don't know where their next meal will come from. Meanwhile, we are wasting 40% of the food we produce every year. Thank you Alexander's Mobility Services for helping us address both hunger and food waste simultaneously!

Here are a few simple ways that you can reduce food waste at home.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
