Ace Worldwide Rescues 34,000 LBS. of Food from Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon

November 21, 2017

The 2017 Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon and 1/2 Marathon was held on November 11-12 and, for the third year in a row, Ace Worldwide - Western Region, an Atlas Van Lines agent, volunteered to rescue any leftover food/beverages from the race.

As you might imagine, running 13.1 or 26.2 miles takes a lot out you. When the runners cross the finish line they are presented their medals and are then offered water, sports drinks, fruits, and other snacks to help replenish their bodies after the grueling competition. There is almost always more than the athletes could possibly consume. Those leftovers might normally have been thrown in a dumpster and sent to a landfill, but thanks to Ace Worldwide all of that perfectly good food -- 32,500 lbs.worth -- was delivered to the Three Square Food Bank. Over the past 3 years, Ace Worldwide has rescued more than 99,000 pounds of food/drinks from the race.

Food waste is a BIG problem. Forty-percent of the food grown, processed and transported in the United States every year is wasted. Our network has rescued nearly 149,000 lbs. of food/beverages from 14 different races across the country this year -- more than we ever have before. And we're not done yet! We have at least six more rescues scheduled before the end of the year.

Thank you to Ace Worldwide - Western Region for helping to contribute to this record-setting year, and for your long-standing commitment to our cause.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
