NorthStar Moving Rescues 7,000 LBS. of Food/Drinks from Los Angeles Marathon

March 30, 2018

On March 18, 24,000 runners from all 50 states and more than 60 countries took part in this year's Los Angeles Marathon. As they crossed the finish line, received their medals, and grabbed some of the complimentary food/drinks to help refuel, the athletes may have caught sight of a bright red moving truck parked nearby. That truck belonged to our good friends from NorthStar Moving Company who, for the second year in a row, volunteered to rescue any of the aforementioned food/drinks that were left behind.

LAMarathon2018_RacePickUP_Northstar2018 (2).jpgA marathon takes a huge toll on the human body, and competitors need to replace the thousands of calories they just burned off as quickly as possible. Endurance events like the Los Angeles Marathon always want to ensure that they have more than enough bananas, bagels, water, sports drinks, etc. for all of the participants. As a result, there's often a lot leftover at huge races like this one, but our network has made it a priority to rescue as much food from as many races as we can.

Luckily, we work with companies like NorthStar Moving, who recognize how much food we can save and want to do everything they can to help. NorthStar's crew was able to recover more than 7,500 lbs. of food/drinks from the race and delivered it all to the Valley Food Bank.

"The team at NorthStar Moving continues to amaze us," said Adam Lowy, Executive Director of Move For Hunger. "Their dedication to helping people in the communities they serve is inspiring. We are grateful for their continued support of our mission to reduce food waste and fight hunger."

The Los Angeles Marathon not only brings together athletes from all over the world, it also brings together our local community,” said NorthStar Moving Co-Founder Laura McHolm. “The healthy snacks and beverages will be put to good use and will serve those in need. We are honored to be a part of the effort to reduce waste at the LA Marathon and continue the race to end hunger.”

NorthStar Moving has rescued more than 12,000 lbs. of food/beverages from the race over the last two years and, since joining the Move For Hunger network in 2010, had delivered more than 47,000 lbs. of food -- enough to provide nearly 40,000 meals -- to food banks in the greater Los Angeles area.

Thank you to Laura and the entire crew at NorthStar Moving for your commitment to fighting hunger and reducing food waste in California!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
