AMWAT Moving, Warehousing & Storage Hosts 5th Annual Fill-A-Truck Food Drive

June 12, 2018

In Leon County, Florida there are over 60,000 citizens, including 1 in 5 children, that suffer from food insecurity on a daily basis. The generous employees at AMWAT Moving, Warehousing & Storage, based in Tallahassee, decided to do something about that. For the past four years, the Wheaton agents have been holding a Fill-A-Truck food drive to help provide meals for their neighbors in need.

AMWAT Moving, Warehousing & Storage parked one of their moving trucks in front of the Tallahassee Democrat's office building, where anyone could come and help fill the trailer with non-perishable food donations. Around 40 national and local businesses participated in the event.

Fill A Truck is one of our favorite types of food drives because it allows companies such as AMWAT Moving. Warehousing & Storage to get plenty of exposure to the public AND collect thousands of pounds of non-perishable food!

Since 2014, AMWAT Moving, Warehousing & Storage has been able to incredibly donate over 106,000 pounds of non-perishable food items which created over 88,000 meals for those in need. This amazing success continued at this year's Fill-A-Truck food drive, as more than 5,500 pounds of non-perishable food was donated -- that's the equivalent of 4,600 meals!

AMWAT Moving, Warehousing & Storage also volunteered to deliver all of the of donations to America’s Second Harvest of the Big Bend.

Florida’s Big Bend region is home to 13 counties, where about 140,000 people, including 32,000 children, are considered to be food insecure. Thank you so much to AMWAT Moving, Warehousing & Storage for being a consistently positive force in fighting food insecurity!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
