AAA Moving & Storage/Allied Alaska Holds their 4th Annual Christmas in July Food Drive

September 11, 2018

The holidays are an exciting and busy time for a lot of us and giving back is a large part of what makes the season so special. And for the fourth year in a row, AAA Moving and Storage/Allied Alaska tried to capture the spirit of giving during the middle of summer by hosting a Christmas in July food drive!

Most people want to hold food drives during the holiday season, but food banks actually face their greatest need during the summer months. Why? Because families who are struggling with food insecurity have to replace the free or reduced-cost meals their children had been receiving at school.

AAA Moving Storage/Allied Alaska recognized the urgency of the problem, and that's why they decided to hold Fill-A-Truck food drives at 5 local grocery stores to help keep the shelves stocked all summer long. This year's drive proved to be the most successful to date, as 6,200 lbs. of food was collected, which is 1,200 lbs. more than 2017 and will provide 5,100 meals to their neighbors in need! All of the donations were delivered to the Food Bank of Alaska.

"There are more than 74,000 people in Alaska that live on incomes that put them at risk of hunger each month," said John Lloyd, General Manager of AAA Moving & Storage/Allied Alaska. "This will go a long way in helping the people of Alaska that are in need."

The holidays can be a stressful time for those suffering from food insecurity and events such as the Christmas in July drive can go a long way toward providing for those in need. If you want to fight hunger in YOUR community, we'd love to help. Let's start planning a food drive today!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
